MAN OF THE YEAR 2015

It is with great pleasure and resounding applause that the Men of MOTY announce the Man of the Year 2015: Dan!

Not only did Dan become a father this year, he led the field of men for a staggering 12 months, won 4 events and made MOTY History by becoming the very first Two-Time MOTY Champion. Congratulations good sir on a well deserved and earned second MOTY title. 

As for the rest of the MOTY Men, congratulations on 60 Epic Events over the past 6 year!

Mouse Trap Car Build

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

In truth, we though this would be more exciting and dangerous thank it was. Alas, no one lost a finger and several cars barely worked. A good night was had by all though!

The Build: Each man is given a supply of craft wood, a glue gun, glue sticks, a mouse trap, a rope, and a metal hanger to build the very best mouse trap can they can. The goal is distance. Each man has 2:30 hours to build this car.

The Event: 3 Runs. The run with the longest distance is counted. Measured in inches.

Cost: 50$ (Includes building materials and Pizza)

RESULTS:

Axe Throwing

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Part 1: Each participant is matched with 3 randomly selected opponents for a round of axe throwing. Each round is best of 5 matches with each match having 5 throws. Wins and total points are kept (5 pts for bulls eye, 3pts  for second ring and 1 pt for outer ring). Clutch shots at the end of a match are worth 7 points). Total points and wins determine round robin placement.

Tournament: Best 3 of 5 matches with winners moving on to next bracket. As a loser bracket was not possible due to timing at BATL, furthest tournament round achieved is taken into consideration for MOTY ranking.

Event rank is determined by: (1) Tournament Winner. (2) Furthest Tournament Round; (3) Wins; and (4) Points.

RC Plane Skills Competition

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

In a large indoor space, timed flights (without crashing), tunnel passes and landing skills made up the event! Dog fights were originally planned but just didn't happen!

Organizer purchased Inum Micro Ultralight RC Planes for all participants.
Cost: 55$: Includes RC Plane & Pizza

Slack Line Challenge

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Description in results. What a challenging event!  Winner gets to keep the slack line.

Cost: 15$: Covers refreshments and slack line (~100$ from Mountain Equipment Coop).

Beer Event

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Ice Cube Tray Relay (10%) 

You will be provided two ice cube trays filled nice cold beer along with a straw.  Sip it up as fast as you can, this will be a timed event.  Ties will be settled by an ice cube tray relay race (1 tray).

4-Cup Flip Cup (15%) 

You will be provided four 4oz cups equal one 16oz pint – this will also be a timed event, drink a cup, flip the cup and move on to the next.  Ties will be settled by a flip cup race.

Beer Pong (25%)
It will be 10 x 1oz cup beer pong.  Everyone will play everyone, winners get a point, losers do not.  Total points wins.  Ties will be settled by another round of beer pong.  This event is where things will likely start to get a little messy.

Jenga (50%) 

Save the best for last, moreover save the event that requires the most coordination for last.  To make things interesting for every successful block you will need to take a 1oz shot of beer.  This event will be judged by the amount of blocks you move from the bottom to the top.  Exact rules will be specified at the time of the event.  Ties will be broken by another round of Jenga by those who are tied.

Note: Throws measured using a radar gun.

Fastest Runner Series
- Hit & run to first base
- Hit & run all bases
Note: Timed using a stop watch. 1 second penalty for missed hits.

Longest Throw:
- Longest throws hitting a designated area. Contestants eliminated with unsuccessful throws.

Warm-up: Individual Clay Pigeons (2 shots)
Round 1: Individual Clay Pigeons (5 shots)

Warm-up: Double Clay Pigeons (1x2 shots in a single throw)
Final Round: Double Clay Pigeons (3x2 shots in a single throw)

Rules:

• Safety first. Zero-tolerance for shenanigans with firearms. 
• Each clay pigeon is worth 1 point.
• Tie-breaks: Sudden Death Clay Shooting.

Bubble Soccer!

Soccer is a game of finesse, fancy foot work and beautiful strikes. Bubble soccer is none of those things! But godd**n it's fun!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

2 Games of bubble soccer each lasting ~20-25 minutes with a 5 minute intermission to recover. Team's change during intermission to ensure fair play for all players. Teams selected at random (6 players per team). Scoring details:

• Winning a game: 2 pts for each member of the team
• Scoring a goal: 2 pts
• Assist on a goal: 1pt
• Most points wins. Ties settled with coin tosses.

Rules: No hitting from behind. No hitting close to edge of pitch.

When: Tuesday, March 31st at 10:00pm

X-Country Ski Race

Is cross-country skiing a manly activity? Here's what our organizer has to say:

They’re not meant to glide you to yoga class or Bed Bath and Beyond.  No, that's what your Prius is for. If that's the kind of weeknight activity you're looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now.  Most X-skiers have been to hell and back, twice, and have the scars to prove it.  So, if you can't handle being seen on a pair of biblical, fire breathing, dragon slaying X-Skis, move on.

Now, go look in the mirror and tell me what you see. If it's a rugged, no holds barred, super brute he-man macho Chuck Norris stunt double, then join us in what is going to be the biggest and fastest X-Skiing race Ottawa has ever seen."

MAN OF THE YEAR 2014

Like a wolverine going to town on a jug of Nutella, Eric destroyed 2014! Maintaining a lead for 12 full months and winning 1/2 of the events thrown at him, this year was his for the winning. Congratulations to you, good sir, on a well earned MOTY title. 

As our long and valued MOTY tradition dictates, to the winner go the spoils. The prestigious MOTY Belt Buckle: 

As the newest Man of the Year, Eric joins the elite MOTY Winners Club. No previous MOTY Winner has been able to defend his title. Will Eric defy history in 2015? We will see!

As for the rest of the MOTY Men, congratulations on 50 Epic Events over the past 5 year!  It's always a blast to battle for glory, laugh, and have a few drinks with you boys.

Everybody, in teams, will have the chance to escape 2 rooms; The Wine Cellar and The Prison Break. Don’t get your hopes up, these rooms are extremely hard to espace from… Normally, teams are given 45mins,we got 30!

#1- Round 1

Once we have settled our number of participants, we are to make 2 teams at Random: Team A and B

#2- The Wine Cellar (scored on 45 pts)

            6:30 Team A has 30 mins to escape the Wine Cellar

            7:10 Team B has 30 mins to escape the Wine Cellar

Team performance score: Both teams are to be scored by our host based on the number of steps accomplished towards escaping on a total of 45 pts. If both teams escape, then time will be looked at. The shortest time of escape will be awarded 5 bonus pts.

#3- Round 2

Once the Wine Cellar is completed, new teams are to be made at random: Team C and D

#4 - The Prison Break (scored on 45 pts)

            7:50 Team C has 30 mins to escape the Prison Break

            8:30 Team D has 30 mins to escape the Prison Break

Team performance score: Both teams are to be scored by our host based on the number of steps accomplished towards escaping on a total of 45 pts. If both teams escape, then time will be looked at. The shortest time of escape will be awarded 5 bonus pts.

#5 - Hidden Point Tokens (scored on 10 pts)

Please take note that in both rooms there will be HIDDEN POINT TOKENS. If you find one, keep it on your person. These tokens will then be added to you PERSONAL score. This added feature will hopefully break the ties.

Your personal score will be the sum of:

Wine Cellar Team Score + Prison Break Team Score + Number of Hidden Point Token Found.

The Great MOTY Beer Run!

Inspired by the great Beer Mile races of the world, the men of MOTY are having their own beer race! Behold, the great MOTY Beer Run!

"Plotting the Course"

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Short run/jog/walk (4km OR 2km) with a beer to be consumed at the start AND end of the race. Fastest time wins. Oh, and it's winter!

"The Course - Off Road Portion"

Date & Time: Wednesday, November 19^th @ 7:30PM

Location: Byward Market & Lindenlea, Ottawa

Race Map: 4KM. No traffic-lights or significant traffic crossings are on the course for safety. A 2km course was available.    

Rules/Scoring:

  

1.      All ½ course participants are ranked below full race participants.

2.      Crossing King Edward will result in a 1 hour penalty.

3.      In case of ties: 1) Longest Distance ran (if relevant/significant) 2) fastest kilometer 3) Coin toss.

4.      All DNFs on either course are ranked in last place. Tie-break rules apply if needed.

5.       In case of timing/tracking/technology errors or disputes, group consensus with organizer having the last word.

Race Data Tracking: Download Strava (Free) on your phones to track and map your run/time. If you can’t download it for whatever reason, let me know.  

Cost: 2-4$ to cover beer cost.

If you're thinking "I don't run - [insert weak un-manly excuse here]" 
1) Suck it up buttercup. Put your big boy pants on and get'r done. The whole event should takes less than 30 minutes and is over a very flat course. It's less than 5k.
2) Above all, the event is an excuse for a few beers with the boys on a weeknight.

10-Pin Bowlerama!

Classic Big Ball 10 Pin Bowling at McArthur Lanes in Vanier, Ottawa. Nothing fancy or complicated! Just some good ol' ball throwin'.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
- 3 games are played.
- All points count toward final score.
- Ties are decided by 1 throw (Most pins win).
- In the event of computer error: (1) Ask staff to fix; (2) if not possible, group vote.

Powered Model Car Build

SEPTEMBER: Powered-Car Build
So this one took a few twists and turns as we realized the limitations of our puny motors !

Original plan: Use a 6amp motor to pull weight up a hill. Most weight wins. Unfortunately, the motors were too weak to pull anything. They barely made the cars move!
Revised plan: Use a 6 amp motor and see how far your car moves. If it`s doing well, add an incline. Strongest car/Distance wins.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Using only provided materials, build a model-car to climb a hill. Access to full tool shop (drills, metal saw, table saw, drill press, hand tools, grinder, etc.)

Materials:
- 1x 8 inch 1/2' metal rod
- 1x 1x6 wooden board + access to plywood
- 1x 6amp engine
- 6x Elastics
- Screws

Biggest challenge: Using only the provided material to attach to motor's gear to your car and make the wheels turn. Wood and a tiny gear don't connect very easily together. The is also difficult to attach.

Fishing Derby

JUNE: Fishing Derby
The man with the biggest fish, wins. One day of fishing (5:15am to 5pm).

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

1. By entering the MOTY Fishing Derby, all participants declare that they have an understanding of all event rules and agree to abide by them. 
2. You are responsible for your safety and actions at all times before, during, and after the Derby. 
3. The fishing area is the entirety of Lac Phillipe. A communal spot will be setup near the main parking lot. Exact location will be sent via text message at the start of the competition. 
4. Entry into Gatineau park is $11 per vehicle. The lake is just inside the park and the is parking just outside. Please arrange carpools or message the convener (613-XXX-XXXX) to come pick you up from outside the gates.  
5. All participants must obtain a legal fishing licence and are responsible for abiding by all QC fishing regulations or may be disqualified. Permits are available for $13 from most local sports, hardware and convenience stores. 
6. Participants are not allowed to fish from the beach, as per park conservation rules. 
7. The MOTY Fishing Derby will commence at dawn (5:15 a.m.) and continue to 5 p.m. Last eligible measurements must be submitted by 5 p.m. Attendance is not mandatory for the duration of the competition.
8. Fishins must be done with regular sport fishing gear. All fish must be caught on rod and reel. Entrants must fish one rod only, with a reserve rod carried if desired. 
9. The fish will be measure in centimeters from the top of the head to the form in the centre of the tail. LONGEST fish wins. Measuring tape will be provided. See attached photo for example.
10. In case of a tie, the first fish measured will be the deciding factor. In case of a dispute, derby convener will make final decision.
11. Entries can be measured when caught, but must be out of the water. Photo’s sent via text message to the Convener (613-XXX-XXX) will be recorded.
12. Derby updates will be transmitted every hour via text message. 
13. The predominant fish in the lake are Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. Only these type of fish are valid for competition entry. 
14. Two canoes will be rented and available for use of up to one hour at a time. Canoes, rowboats and kayaks are available for rent for longer periods of time. Motorized boats are not permitted on the lake. 
15. Lunch will be provided around noon, and water bottles available throughout the day. Please bring anything else you need for food/drink. 
16. Gatineau Park does not allow alcoholic beverages and may give fines. 
17. Dogs are not allowed near the lake.

Rocket Car Racing

Just like rocket-sled racing, but on the street!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
After a short build time, the cars are judged, wagers are placed, and then raced to see who's car goes the furthest. Winner has the most points after all events.

Build
Build Time: 1.5 hours
Build Materials: Glue gun, glue, Popsicle sticks, 3xC6 Rocket, 4 axles + wheels

Judging (10%)
Our beautiful wives judged cars based on aesthetics and "most likely to win". This was a blind-judging to ensure fair judging.

Wagers & Runs (90%):
Each man picks his 3 favorite cars to win.
Each car races 3 heats. Each car is ranked by distance per heat.

BBQ Tasting and Cooking Challenge

APRIL: BBQ Tasting and Cooking Challenge
Meat! It's what's for breakfast!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
In a nutshell, the boys had to identify different types of burgers, sliders, ribs, mustards, colas, lemonade sweeteners, chips and, to top off this meat-show of a day, cook the perfect medium rare steak medallion! Here's the basic scoring sheet:

10.Cook-Off!: Steak Temperature Reading: Center - Side - Between (Average of 3 is taken)(10pts medium rare, 7pts rare/medium well, 3pts  blue or well, 0 for a butchered steak)

Winner was the participant with the most correct answers. Ties were broken by closest temperatures to perfect medium-rare (130-135 degrees) in the steak cook off!

MOTY April Announced: BBQ Tasting Challenge!

A good man knows his BBQ'd meat. Period.  What better place to test this than at a MOTY BBQ Taste Challenge!

This challenge will be a test of identification through taste, smell and feel of the following:

- Cooked Steaks: identifying blue, rare, med. rare, medium and well done.
- Burger Quality: identifying fatty, regular, lean and extra lean burgs.
- Types of burgers: identifying turkey, chicken, beef and, *sigh* tofu burgers.
